“Bocada-Built”: 2023 Year-In-Review, a New SaaS Product, and a Look Ahead

Happy New Year to our customers, partners, employees, and friends in the data protection community! 

On behalf of the Bocada team, I would like to take a moment to provide a high-level recap of our 2023, introduce our newest product, and share a glimpse of what’s to come in 2024. 

2023 at Bocada was the Year of Building, during which we prioritized building and expanding the products, capabilities, and teams we need to deliver game-changing value for our customers. Against a challenging macroeconomic backdrop, our team remained laser-focused on building throughout the year, and I believe we’ve got plenty to show for it! 

New in Bocada Enterprise (formerly “Bocada”) in 2023: 

• 🧩 Five New Connectors (Formerly “Plugins”). We continue to build out the portfolio of supported data protection applications, most recently adding support for Metallic, Dell Apex, HYCU, Nutanix, and Oracle Enterprise Manager in 2023. (See all 40+ connectors) 
• 🤝🏽 REST APIs for Bocada Enterprise. Bocada now gives customers greater flexibility and control over their use of the Bocada platform, including the ability to bring data and reports into any third-party application, automate password rotation, and more. (Read the announcement) 
• 📊 Enhanced Dashboards. With an overhaul of our dashboards, Bocada has given customers the power and flexibility to make/share/export multiple custom dashboards. (Learn more) 
• 🗒️ ServiceNow Enhancements. We continually invest in automating daily operations including creating and managing backup failure incident tickets. 
• ☁️ Cloud Storage Reporting and Alerting. Cloud is still in the early days of adoption for many enterprises. In 2023, Bocada doubled down on building capabilities for AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud Platform (GCP) data protection and storage monitoring. (Read the announcement) 
• ⚠️ Disaster Recovery (DR) Reporting.  We built and deployed more robust DR monitoring with vital RPO and RTO reporting and alerting. (Read the announcement) 

…And We Built an Entirely NEW Product! 

• 🛠️ We’ve built and launched our newest product, Bocada Cloud, into free early access / open beta 
• 🏢 Bocada Cloud makes SaaS/cloud-based automated data protection monitoring accessible to organizations of any size

Other Milestones: 

• 🙋🏽 We grew our global team by 30% YOY in 2023, mostly in our engineering and product groups

Looking Ahead 

As we consider the data protection landscape going forward, here are several relevant observations. 

• 🤖 Breakthroughs in AI are enabling step function improvements in data protection, including cyberthreat prediction/detection, automation and customer support. (E.g. Veeam announcement) 
• 🛡️ The lines between cybersecurity and data protection continue to blur, as enterprise backup providers move to add more cybersecurity and threat detection capabilities into their products. (E.g. Rubrik acquires Laminar) 
• 💰 Ransomware is increasingly understood as not just a security concern (something to prevent) but also a business continuity concern (something to mitigate when it gets past even the best cybersecurity measures). As such, maintaining a strong backup strategy & is increasingly seen as critical to minimizing downtime/damage from such attacks.  
  • From Sophos’ The State of Ransomware 2023:

• ☁️☁️☁️ The shift towards multi-cloud IT environments is pervasive, with 78% of enterprise teams using three or more public clouds. Even as data protection professionals long for simplicity (in the end state of these migrations), complexity remains the modern reality. 
• ⚙️ Automation is a critical priority for data protection pros in 2024, who are being asked to “do more with less.” Respondents from LinkedIn’s Backup & Recovery Professionals group had this to say in a Q4 2024 poll: 

What’s Ahead for Bocada 

Given the trends we’re observing and our customers’ evolving needs, Bocada will continue to build strategically in 2024. Here are a few initiatives Bocada customers can expect to see launch announcements and meaningful updates on in 2024: 

• 📈 AI-based event forecasting in Bocada Enterprise including storage and failure forecasts. 
• ⚙️ “Automation, automation, automation.” We will drive operational efficiency to reduce manual tasks for storage and backup professionals with enhanced dashboard tools, APIs and DR reporting. 
• ☁️ Continued focus on enabling even more cloud/multi-cloud use cases, such as expanded resource detection, synchronized, cross-platform tagging, and support for more cloud applications. 
• 💽 Expanded Storage Monitoring. Bocada Enterprise will expand the number of storage platforms we support and add broader visibility for storage monitoring that goes beyond data protection storage. 
• 🎉 Commercial Launch of Bocada Cloud. In Q1, we will release Bocada Cloud with a specific focus on managed service providers (MSPs) and small and medium-sized (SMB) organizations. We have a feature-rich roadmap for Bocada Cloud in 2024 and look forward to making Bocada’s enterprise-grade automation and monitoring capabilities available to many more customers.
