I T departments everywhere
are constantly challenged to find better, simpler, more cost
effective ways to store, protect and manage the increasing volume and
complexity of their data. The goal for these organizations is to
simplify and standardize the overall number of data centers, servers,
disparate applications and overall systems—while at the same time
saving money. In other words, they are being asked to perform more
tasks with fewer resources.
One approach is to
reduce the number of servers and storage devices by merging data
centers, consolidating applications on fewer servers, installing
blade servers or moving from single attached storage units to
storage-area networks. But consolidating the broader infrastructure
doesn’t necessarily drive efficiencies in data protection.
Consolidating data protection systems requires a process-oriented
approach.
The organizations
that have been most successful at consolidating their data protection
efforts have focused on processes and people, rather than hardware
and software. Once they gain a consolidated view of their operations
with a centralized data protection reporting application, they
quickly achieve their ultimate goal: the shift to simplified and
standardized proactive management.
